The Newspaper of our School

Members of our team are involved in the creation of the school newspaper and -as always- we are going to take advantage of that!  We have agreed with the teachers and the students who are responsible for the newspaper that one of the students of our team will write an article in each of the first editions of the newspaper about the environmental problems in general!

This way we hope that we will be able to access all of the students in our school and maybe after they read what we have to say they will think twice before using the car to go to a shop only 200 metres from their home!

Results of the International School Competition

This evening we were really excited to read the results of the CO2nnect International School Competition!  That was because the juries honoured our project report with the first prize!  We were elated to read their comments about our work, too!

Click here to read the comments of the juries about our project

We, hence, want to thank the Juries for giving the first prize to us and congratulate ALL the other schools for their terrific and remarkable activities and project reports!

We also want to reassure you that this prize, which is the recognition of all of our hard work, won't be the happy ending of our activities in our community.  On the contrary, it will be a trigger that will push us to be even more active and creative in order to sensitize everyone in our community, for a better planet!

We want to conclude with just one (promising) phrase: the best is yet to come!;)

Read our book the INNOVATIVE way!;)

Our books are now available to read in a new, innovative way! You can flip the pages on your screen like you'd flip them if you had the book in front of you! This is the site that contains our books: http://co2books.webs.com/ and here are all the links to reading the books:

New Plans for the year!

Although we have submitted our project report that doesn't mean that we're done with this campaign! As a matter of fact we have already started to make new plans for the campaign since we have a lot of new students in our school!

Our plans include the creation of a simple application for the computer which we will give to students in small CDs and those applications will contain games, crosswords, puzzles, etc, all concerning the environment! We know that if not all then at least 95% of the students of our school own a laptop or a desktop so we think that they may find this idea entertaining and educating!

We will also talk to the new students while they are having lessons, like we did last year for all students. What's more is that we are going to add some students to our club from other classes so that we can more easily access every one in the school!

Our project report

Our project report was uploaded to co2nnect.org this week.

Here you can see the project reports of all participating schools: http://co2nnect.org/results/?vis=rapporter

And to read our project report go here: http://co2nnect.org/innsendt/pdf/vedlegg/85/4ac3c01ccde0a/lykeio_agiou_ioanni.pdf

If you are interested in watching our videos you can find them in the sidebar of this blog (on the right of this post) or you could just follow these links: first video, second video and the video of when we planted trees.

To read our stories you can find the links below the videos in the sidebar or you can just follow these links: A Snail's Life and The adventures of the Three Squirrels. You can also download them.

To find out more about our campaign (even some stuff that wasn't included in the project report) read all of our posts which can be easily accessed through the archive in the sidebar. Don't forget to visit some of our favourite sites related to our campaign or to the environment by using the links in the sidebar (which are below the title Sites you have to visit!).

By the way, we saw some really good reports there! A lot of students from all over the world have worked really hard for this campaign! It's very nice to see that although we live thousands of kilometres away from these students our aims are the same! Only difference is the approach!

Good luck to everyone!

Back to school!

We got back to school and we're preparing for new and even better activities for the campaign!

What we are going to do for the following month is to write a report of what we did and upload it to the site so a lot more people will know about our activities! We hope we'll become good examples!

What the team has to say about the campaign

When our teacher, Mrs Maria Loizou, informed us about this competition, we responded positively immediately. The subject of environmental problems and especially the climate change caused by several means of transportation seems to be an issue that stimulates our interest, since it is something that relates to us on a high extend.

Having a first glance at the subject intrigued us extremely. Through working for this campaign we acquired an affluence of knowledge regarding the problems that our planet is suffering from. Therefore we made our attempt to find a list of actions in order to reverse the current conditions, distinguishing firstly what is beneficial and what is harmful for our planet. We adopted various strategies aiming at generating fruitful circumstances.

We feel very happy that we took part in such a program, due to the fact that it gave us the opportunity to raise awareness concerning climate change, among our environment (classmates, teachers, citizens, relatives).

We hope that such opportunities will be offered to us again and again in the future!
by all the students of our team

HOME: gives us HOPE!

The film HOME was proved to be a success!
A truly amazing film. You can watch it here:

Getting close to an end...

The school year is almost over so it is time to check what we have achieved. We gave the students, the teachers and our relatives the same questionnaire we gave them two months ago with just a few changes.

The results we obtained were magnificent! The awareness of everyone about the environmental problems has increased and less people now use cars! We hope it's not just because of the better weather!:D

We hope that everyone has a great summer!

HOME

We found out about this amazing film and we decided to make our own posters about it and give them to all drivers that are passing by our school!

Here is our poster (and next to it is the translation in English):

(talking to students about HOME and giving flyers to them)

"A snail's life" and "The adventures of the three squirrels"

We also have the two short stories now! Their titles are "A snail's life" and "The adventures of the three squirrels".

We decided to print a lot of copies of these two books and gift them to the Primary School next to our school! We hope that the young children will like them and will learn a lot from them!

You can also read the stories here. They were translated in English! But please don't steal them.

The adventures of the three squirrels

Creativity and Innovation Day was today!

Everything went well! We gave a lot of bookmarks away and we advertised this blog! I hope that people will apply what they learned!

There were also some reporters from some local TV channels there! We grabbed the chance of talking through the TV to every citizen of Limassol about what we are doing!

Recycling paper at school

All schools in Cyprus carried out creative and innovative activities for the "Day of Creativity and Innovation"! A technology teacher showed the students how paper is recycled and they had the great opportunity to recycle too! Aren't they lucky?!

Creativity and Innovation Day

It was decided that our school would have its own Creativity and Innovation Day when parents and citizens would be invited to see the achievements of the students of the school at an exposition. We will have our own booth for co2nnect and we will give a lot of information about our campaign and this blog!

This is the poster that we created for this special day! And next to it is its translation in English.

"The Green Tree"

We asked from some students who had a talent in writing to write some poems and short stories for us. The poem is ready. It has the title "The Green Tree" and here it is:

Although a tree has not a soul
it can save our souls.
Although a tree cannot speak
it is able to do many other things.
Its presence is important
if we want our world to be immortal,
but its multiplication seems to be necessary
if we want to breathe undauntedly.
It functions as a sponge
that sucks up both impurity and its clone.
Gases which are harmful
are no longer disregardful.
Thus protect the green tree
in order to live and kill any adversary!

This poem was written by Michalis Papapanagiotou and is going to be read in all classes during the English Language lesson!

Well done Michalis!

You can read this poem in all pages of our blog through the sidebar on the right of this post! A link will be added there for you to read our stories, translated in English, too!

The Bus Company of Limassol

A group of our students discussed some topics with the local bus company (the company that controls the buses in Limassol). They discussed about how they can make buses more attractive for students and other people to use instead of cars.

An ancient environmentally friendly creation.

Archytas (an ancient Greek inventor) invented a 100% environmentally friendly way to make his structure fly. We tried to recreate this structure, which Archytas called his "pigeon" and here is a picture of our pigeon!

Our second video is also ready!

We are once again very proud to present our new video!

The music this time is from a song called "Daniel" by Bat for Lashes.

Who is the prisoner now? We are in a jail that we created ourselves. We are surrounded by harmful gases and tall buildings. The last bit of green in this city is the plant in the cell of this prisoner.

Green Dot

Some students from our school visited Green Dot last week. Green Dot is an organisation that gives a lot of information about recycling!

When the students returned to the school they decided to pass the information they learned to the rest of the students and teachers of our school. They also gave us recycling bags!

(pictures from a student that went to Green Dot informing the teachers of our school about recycling and giving recycling bags)

Our first video!

After a lot of hard work we are proud to present our first video!

This video is about the use of means of transport that reduce the carbon dioxide emissions in air.

The music used for this video is from the song "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve.

eTwinning and CO2nnect. Any connection?

Some students that participate in the co2nnect campaign are also participating in a European program where they cooperate with schools from Europe. They have their own online magazine and they decided to write some articles about the pollution of air and the environment.

You can visit their magazine by following this link:

http://magazinefactory.edu.fi/magazines/e_teens/

The creation of the "Environmentally Friendly" Club of our school

After submitting this idea to our teachers we noticed a lot of excitement! We were excited too! Some students that watched our presentations at the library asked us how they could help us. What's better than this club?!

Now we can ask for their advice and ideas!

A great creation!

A group of students decided to create something to depict their idea of recycling! They used the "4 R'S": Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Respect!

Here is a picture of what they created!

A very cool website!

While searching for facts about the emissions of carbon dioxide, we came across this amazing and very useful website! It is called WORLDOMETERS and it contains a lot of meters (obviously) that are updated every millisecond! It is extremely interesting as it contains meters concerning the environment, such as: the forest loss this year, the carbon dioxide emissions this year (we will definitely use this one in our presentations), the species that have gone extinct this year and much more! We are going to prompt a lot of students to visit this site!

Be sure to check it out at: http://www.worldometers.info/

The link to this website is also available in the sidebar in the right for easy access through all of the pages in our blog! A lot of other interesting websites will be added there so don't forget to visit them all!

Our new posters are ready!

Here are our two new posters:

These are the same posters but in English:

We hope that you like them!

Planting Trees and Talking to Students during Lessons

This week we planted some trees in the school yard with the help of our friends! Everyone had fun by doing something great for the school.

(some of the hard working students while planting and watering)

We are now also allowed to make 5-minute presentations about our campaign to students during their lessons.

This is a video from when students planted some of the trees:

This video is available in the sidebar in the right of the posts and you can hence watch it in all pages of this blog! Our next videos will also be uploaded there!

Two awesome videos!

We found these 2 great videos that we'd love to share with the world!

They are shocking!

Our "library project"!

Today the teachers who are responsible for the library allowed us to make some presentations there for our campaign! We can do these presentations during some breaks!

(pictures from our presentations and from our audience... added to this post later)

What we did so far... (MARCH 2009)

We have already given out some questionnaires to students and we are analysing the results.

(pictures of students filling out questionnaires and receiving bookmarks)

We also sent a letter to the mayor some time ago about the enormous numbers of cars that we find every day in the streets making respiration a tough job for our lungs!

We designed bookmarks and gave them to a lot of students. We aim to give these bookmarks to all students and all teachers in our school!

OUR PLANS FOR APRIL:

We decided that planting trees in the school yard will be a good idea. There are some places at school with no green at all so we will focus in planting trees there instead of somewhere with a lot of grass.

We also started to design posters for the walls of our school!

HOW WE WORK:

We have agreed that our team will have meetings once a week. At our meetings we will make suggestions, share and improve ideas and comment on how efficient one of our ideas that we put to action was. The main point of these meetings will hence be to decide if one of our ideas is actually going to work (by work we mean to sensitize students, teachers or citizens) or if it will just be a waste of time. That is what we think that the correct way to judge an activity is! We also decided to ask students that are not part of our team about their opinions on our plans.

In this picture you can see the bookmarks that we gave to the students and in the picture below you can see the same bookmarks but in English.

Who We Are

We are a team of about 20 students from Lykeio Agiou Ioanni, a secondary high school in Limassol, Cyprus. We are all at the first year in our school (15-16 years old) and we are obviously all interested in the harmful consequences of the excessive emissions of carbon dioxide for our planet.

We are one of only 4 schools currently participating in this campaign from our relatively small country, Cyprus. Our target is that this campaign will become as popular in our country as it is in other countries like Malaysia, Romania and Jordan. And we are hoping to achieve this one way (by ourselves) or another (with the help of authorities)!

We are motived by our will to change our classmates' beliefs and habits. From the moment we announced to them that we are taking part in this campaign we have heard a lot of them say the same thing: "Do you think you're going to change the world by yourself?". We want to prove them all wrong because we are aware that even the slightest change is for the best! We will put all our efforts in making this campaign as fruitful as it can be!

Our new blog!

Welcome to our new blog!

The purpose of this blog is to show all of our work for the co2nnect.org campaign!

We will upload pictures and videos and keep you posted with the latest news of our activities! One of our targets is to make this blog as user-friendly as it can be! So there is easy access to every post in the sidebar in the right of the posts. There will also be links showing our work in this sidebar which will make our work accessible from every page of this blog!

We hope that you will appreciate our hard work and that you will find what you see in this blog useful!
